  • Pharmacognosy standardization, characterization, quantitative analysis of herbal medicines such as Echinacea, and propolis with HPTLC and HPLC.

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate studies and research in Botany. Research conducted at Zhongshan (Sun Yat-sen) University includes taxonomy of Clauseneae, anatomy of Tsugo-Keteleeria longibracteata and ecological effects of Farmland Forest Net on production of rice.
  • Chemistry and quantitative analysis of medicinal plants. Isolation, identification of alkaloids, coumarins, and essential oils in Murray, Clausena, Micormelum of Clauseneae (Rutaceae), Quantitative analysis of indole alkaloid yuehchukene in Murraya species at Zhongshan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Sydney under supervision of Prof HT Chang and YC Kong; Carried out clinical research on the pharmacokinetics of the anti-rheumatoid arthritis drug hydroxychloroquine mainly involving in the quantitative analysis and enantiomer separation of the drug in humane fluids with HPLC.
  • Chemistry and bioactive substances from medicinal plants. Carried out study for new Ca2+-ATPase inhibitors from natural and synthetic compounds as potential agents for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases with Prof B Roufogalis and Dr CC Duke. Long chain alkyl phenols which act at enzyme, cellular and organ levels were isolated and identified from Grevillea robusta and granted US patent.
  • Chemical profile and fingerprint, bioactive substances from herbal medicines, Working with Prof B Roufogalis, Dr CC Duke, Dr YH Li. Research and development of Gynostemma pentaphyllum for management of hyperlipidemia; Mechanism of action and active components of herbal medicines including Punica granatum, Salacia oblonga for management of diabetics; Pharmacognosy standardization, quality analysis with HPTLC and HPLC of herbal medicines such as Echinacea sp, Panax ginseng, Aristolochia, Ginkgo biloba, and propolis.
