Research Interests

Dr Pont’s research interest is the development of resources to assist the primary care pharmacist in aboriginal communities, whether remote of on the fringes of rural towns and cities.

Dr Pont has assembled a team to support self-management by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with chronic heart failure.

CHF is among the top four most prevalent cardiovascular conditions in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, with an estimated prevalence ratio of 1.7 (age standardised) compared with non-Indigenous Australians.

Opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make informed choices about treatment are limited. Miscommunication between health staff and patients from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups has been identified as a barrier in making informed decisions about treatment options and adherence to medical advice.

This project aims to improve patient access to heart failure information to support self-management by developing culturally and clinically appropriate resource/s. Resource development and dissemination into practice will be guided by the findings of a needs analysis at the outset of the project. The final resource/s developed may include a suite of information formats to address the identified needs and incorporate factors such as literacy levels, cultural identity, language requirements and comprehension of medical concepts.
