Background

Dr Smith’s research has focused on the development of a patient-focused self-management framework in disease state management services. Her work with the Pharmacy Practice team has resulted in the development of a model of structured, step-wise goal setting, accompanied by goal strategy development, adaptable to a range of disease state management services and harnessing patient involvement and motivation. The team has attracted over $3million funding in the past four years for projects including goal setting as a key component. The goal setting model is now being used in two national implementation projects for type 2 diabetes and asthma services in community pharmacies. Dr Smith is also a co-investigator on an ARC Linkage Grant project investigating the self-management practices of young people (8-19 years) with type 1 diabetes. In 2008, she was awarded competitive funding by The Pharmacy Guild of Australia and The Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing as Chief Investigator for research into a goal setting self-management model of allergic rhinitis in community pharmacies. Since 2002, Dr Smith has supervised a total of fifteen honours, masters and doctoral students investigating patient focused self-management of chronic disease.

Research Interests

Dr Smith’s work as a psychologist in healthcare research has resulted in invited talks and seminars to a range of healthcare groups (eg. Australasian Pharmaceutical Sciences Association National Conference; Department of Nursing and Midwifery, Bournemouth University, UK; NSW College of Nursing). In 2008, she was elected to the Board of the Hepatitis C Council of NSW due to her expertise in patient self-management practices in chronic disease. In 2009, Dr Smith spent two months as a Visiting Senior Research Academic at the University of Oxford. This work is part of an international collaboration between The University of Sydney and University of Oxford investigating patient experiences of health and illness. A methodology for implementing similar research in Australia is being developed.

Dr Smith’s other key research interest is the motivational approaches students take to their learning and how this influences the quality of their learning and their academic performance. Research projects have involved following undergraduate and Master pharmacy students over the course of their degree, investigating their study strategies, motivations for learning, and reasons for study.
