Foundations of Pharmacy

Main focus of the placement: Orientation in community pharmacy

Objectives of the placement:

  • Assist students to gain insight into the basic environment of community pharmacy
  • Provide an opportunity for students to assess their interest in the field
  • The placements complement on-campus lectures and workshops
  • Requires students to carry out a number of observational activities which are discussed and consolidated in subsequent workshops

Social Pharmacy

Coordinator: Dr Lorraine Smith
Main focus of the placement: Introduction to community pharmacy

Objectives of the placement:

  • Identify and describe the spectrum of pharmacy practice activities within community pharmacy
  • Describe the patterns of prescribed medication distributed by community pharmacy
  • Explain the roles of a range of healthcare professionals and how they interrelate within the healthcare system

Pharmacy Practice 3A & 3B

Coordinator: Dr Tim Chen & Dr Rebekah Moles
Main focus of the placement: Interaction in healthcare settings with patient and carers; medication reviews

Objectives of the placement:

  • Familiarise students with their future professional working role and working environment
  • Processing prescriptions, counselling patients and counter prescribing
  • Specific tasks include interviewing patients about particular disease states to gain insight into the patient's perception of their condition

Integrated Pharmacy Practice

Coordinator: Dr Betty Chaar
Main focus of the placement: Interaction in healthcare setting with patient and carers; medication reviews

Objectives of the placement:

  • Obtain an awareness and appreciation of how the patients, and the patient's professional and non-professional carers interact in a variety of health care settings, including hospital, specialist clinic, community and residential aged care
  • Promote patient focussed healthcare which includes medication management
  • Gain experience in conducting patient focussed medication reviews in these settings

Main focus of the placement: Medication reviews

Objectives of the placement:

  • As for Semester 1 of Year 4, additionally placements will be undertaken in other non-clinical settings and focus more on the global provision of healthcare services and the healthcare systems in place in Australia
