Role of the Kynurenine Pathway in the Aetiology of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia in elderly people and accounts for over 20 million cases of acute illness worldwide. There is a large body of evidence that links the kynurenine pathway (KP) neuroactive metabolites, in particular kynurenic acid and quinolinic acid to the aetiology of Alzheimer’s disease. An appropriate balance of these molecules is essential for normal neuronal function. This research project aims to develop a new generation of KP regulators, incorporating molecular modelling, traditional chemical synthesis and biological testing (in vitro / in vivo) to further expand the current structure activity relationship data.
