Herb-drug interactions with hypoglycaemic medicines and Understanding variability in response to diabetes medicines.

1. Interactions between complementary medicines and the anti-diabetic medicine gliclazide will be studied in healthy volunteers. Subjects will receive a single dose of gliclazide alone and co-administered with the herbal medicine St John’s wort. The impact of individual genetic variations on drug response will be studied by testing Cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) genotypes.
2. Type 2 diabetes patients will be studied to find out the impacts of drug and diabetes knowledge, diet, genetic variations and other factors on glycaemic control.
