Quality use of extemporaneous preparations to satisfy unmet medication needs in the community.

Extemporaneous compounding (preparation from the component ingredients of a specific product for immediate use by a specific patient) is a growing area of pharmacy practice and regulatory bodies have expressed concerns about quality standards, yet very little is known. The aims of my research are to assess the extent and scope of extemporaneous dispensing in community pharmacy in Australia, and to examine compounding standards implemented in community pharmacies and how those standards relate to the quality of product and service. The findings of this research will assist in an informed assessment of the risk posed by extemporaneous dispensing by pharmacists and the influence of compounding standards and their degree of implementation, on product quality.
