Immune-modulatory Effects of Herbal Medicines with Thalidomide on NK/T cell Anti-Myeloma Activities.

Multiple Myeloma is an incurable tumour in the bone marrow. This is a study of immune-modulatory effects of herbal medicines in combination with Thalidomide on NK and T cells activities against myeloma tumour cells. This is an integrative in vitro study, combining traditional and conventional medicines. The combination of herbal medicines with Thalidomide would have synergistic effects in promoting the immune functions and at the same time suppressing the growth and/or having cytotoxic effects on the myeloma tumour cells. A positive outcome would lead to animal studies and clinical trials. The benefits to the patients may be the reduction in Thalidomide dosages and side effects, prolonging survival and improving therapeutic response.
