Traditional Chinese herbs as sources of endophytes and anti-cancer compounds
An opportunity to develop novel anti-cancer compounds comes from endophytes. Endophytes are bacterial or fungal micro-organisms that reside inside plants. They have been relatively unstudied and offer a significant reservoir of novel bioactive secondary metabolites and genetic diversity. A genetic screen is used to select TCMs containing endophytes which have the ability to produce bioactive compounds. By identifying endophytes that are producing natural products we aim to produce leads for the development of future anti-cancer compounds.
