Herb-drug interactions and the anti coagulant Warfarin
Recent studies revealed few alarming signs of the potential for herbal medicines to interact with prescription medicines and alter their therapeutic activity. These interactions may be fatal particularly with drugs with narrow safety window. Our research group is interested to explore and understand the mechanisms of interactions of commonly used herbal medicines and Warfarin, a drug prone to interactions with many other drugs. Randomised crossover studies are underway to study the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions of commonly used herbal medicines which have potential to interact with Warfarin.
