Design, Synthesis and Pharmacology of GABAC Receptor Agonists and Antagonists.

The GABAergic system consists of three major receptor classes termed GABAA, GABAB and GABAC (Chebib and Johnston; JMC, 2000). The GABAA and GABAC receptors are members of the ligand-gated ion channel and the GABAB receptor is a member of G-protein coupled receptors. The GABAC receptor may play a role in visual processing, memory and learning, regulation of hormones and neuroendocrine gastrointestinal secretion. We are interested in design and synthesis of selective, more lipophilic GABAC agonist and antagonist to use as pharmacological tools to evaluate the role of GABAC receptors in the CNS.
