Rational Drug Designing for Schizophrenia and Liver Fibrosis.

Our labs have identified genes for Kynurenine aminotransferase – I (KAT-I) and the dipeptidyl peptidase (DP) gene family in the pathophysiology of Schizophrenia and liver fibrosis, respectively. The aim of my PhD project is to express and purify these enzymes, and to determine structures of enzyme/inhibitor complexes for each enzyme for the drug design process. The project requires familiarity with high-throughput protein expression using bacterial and baculovirus-mediated insect cell expression systems, subsequent purification strategies and knowledge on X-ray crystallography and structure elucidation. This project also incorporates homology modeling for structure prediction and use of bioinformatics tools for lead discovery.
