Effect of design on the performance of a dry powder inhaler using computational and experimental analysis.
This project seeks to develop fundamental understanding of the dispersion mechanisms of powders as aerosol for inhalation drug delivery and apply this understanding to the better design of dry powder inhalers. It couples computational simulations using computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (DEM) with experimental dispersion analysis to improve the efficiency of dry powder inhalers. Successful development of this research will thus lead to a comprehensive understanding of factors controlling inhaler performance, maximizing the therapeutic benefits according to the patient’s need. Upon completion of this project, the outcome is expected to bring a novel nanotechnology to produce aerosols for enhanced inhalation drug delivery to the lung.
