Development of the electrical Next Generation Impactor (eNGI) for the study of electrostatic charge in pharmaceutical aerosols.
Pressurised metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) and dry powder inhalers (DPIs) can generate charge in aerosol formulations. Electrostatic charge has been shown to have a discernible impact on the deposition of pharmaceutical aerosols in the human lung. There are currently no methods of measuring electrostatic charge and particle size distribution of particles that are specifically designed for pharmaceutical aerosols. The aim of this project is to design, develop, build and use an NGI with additional charge measurement capabilities – the eNGI.
