VARIAN GEMINI 2000 Rules of Use
- When entering the NMR room you are to deposit any keys, creditcards, wristwatch etc in the tray provided. Other metallic items, e.g. clips staplers etc are not to be brought into the room.
- Bookings are to be made on the whiteboard provided only for overnight runs, you would normally only need 7hrs of this time, if your sample is extreamly weak then use the whole session time for your run. You may not book the instrument weeks in advance.
- Overnight runs are to commence no earlier than 7pm, this is limited by the software but can be submitted earlier to the queue if you are leaving early. After 5pm is reserved for experiments such as 13C or the more complicated 2-D experiments.
- No eating or drinking in the NMR room will be permitted.
- During the day each user is limited by software control to 1hr maximum per session, this is for Proton only, Carbon or 2D NMR should be run at night.
- Please report any breakages (e.g.: tube broken in probe) to Bruce Tattam or designated staff IMMEDIATELY.
- If the computer locks up please report to Bruce Tattam or Susan Manners.
- All users will be trained by Bruce Tattam or designated staff. No user is to give instruction to any unqualified user. Penalty: loss of right of use of the instrument.
- When the room is vacated, check that the door has locked securly, never prop the door open.
- In the unlikely event of a magnet QUENCH vacate the room immediately.
Safety Precautions
- Keep metal objects away from the magnet dewar.
- Do not operate in the presence of flammable gases or fumes.
- Leave area immediately in the event of a magnet quench.
- Do not look down the probe barrel unless upper probe is removed from the magnet, you could be injured by the sample tube as it ejects.
- Do not exceed the boiling or freezing point of a sample during variable temperature experiments.
- Only qualified maintenance personnel shall remove the rear of side console covers.
Sample Information
- Amount recommended: 1H 3-10mg 3C 10-50mg
- Solvent: 0.7 ml i.e. 8in (204mm) length
- Place tube in spinner, adjust to correct depth in the sample depth gauge tube and insert sample into the autosample at the position designated by the number on the spinner adapter.
System Login/Logout
System Login:
- Login with Username and Password
- This take you straight into the Vnmrj main application page.
To Exit VNMR and Logout of system:
- Click on the Switch Operator button
Experiment Selection
- Select the appropiate Expertiment in the Experimental Panel.
Take care that if running any experiment that has a Gradient version of that experiment that you select that experiment or you data will be comprmised, this instrument uses gradient shiming on Z only.
Solvent Locking
This occurs automatically when the experiment is submitted to the queue.
