Warwick Wilkinson Pharmacy Management Postgraduate Research Scholarship

This scholarship represents a unique opportunity to be part of the leading Pharmacy Practice research group in Australia and to undertake research in a field that is highly relevant to pharmacists, professional pharmacy organisations, the pharmacy industry, the government and those involved in developing policy.

The successful applicant will have excellent liaison skills and be able to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders. In addition to this, the successful applicant will either have a first class honours degree, or equivalent and relevant experience in pharmacy, health sciences, business, marketing or economics.

The scholarship shall be tenable for no more than two years for a Master’s student and up to three years for a PhD, with an extension of six months in exceptional circumstances.

W H and Elizabeth M Deane Pharmaceutical Fund PhD Scholarship

William Houison Deane was a great contributor to the University of Sydney during his lifetime, and in 1956 created the W H and Elizabeth M Deane Pharmaceutical Fund. This fund was established for use by the Faculty of Pharmacy to conduct research in the area of direct pain relieving drugs. The Faculty is offering a scholarship for commencing PhD students studying in this area. The scholarship will be valid for 3 years.

Elizabeth Wunsch Postgraduate Research Scholarship

Two scholarships, funded by a bequest from Elizabeth Wunsch, are available in the following areas of research:

Research in Biomaterials/Drug Delivery Devices: The research project will study the incorporation of bone forming drugs (e.g. Bone Morphogenetic Proteins - BMP) into dental and bone implants/graft materials, determine drugs release profile in vitro, and evaluate the effects of drug loaded materials on periodontal ligament (PDL) and osteoblast cells. The outcomes of the project could enhance the success rate of implants by increasing the implant/host tissue interfacial strength and stability, reducing both implant failure rate and the need for revision surgery.

The scholarship will suit an enthusiastic individual with a Biomedical, Biomaterials or Pharmacy background who has an interest in a highly interdisciplinary research project and can bridge the fields of biomaterials and pharmaceutical sciences.

Crystal Engineering for Respiratory Delivery: The research project will study improving the performance of inhalation medicines. Most inhalation medicines on the market today have inherently poor performance, with less than 20% of the marketed dose reaching the lung. By engineering particulate systems with controlled crystalline form and surface chemistry, we aim to improve the performance of these systems. This PhD project will develop a fundamental understanding of the principles that govern crystalline structure and directly apply this knowledge to engineer drug systems for inhalation therapy. By understanding molecular interaction at the quantum level, using in silico computational techniques, the successful prediction of lead candidates will be conducted. These models will be expanded to predict long-range order, physical characteristics, crystal habit, surface chemistry and ultimately aerosol performance.

The successful candidate will have a background in the physical sciences (eg. chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, pharmaceutics). Experience in computational chemistry, crystallography and surface sciences would be advantageous.

Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme

The Rural Pharmacy Scholarships have been established to provide financial support to encourage and enable students from rural and remote communities to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at University. There are up to 30 scholarships offered annually, with a value of $10,000 per annum per student (ie. $40,000 per student over a four year period). Scholarship recipients are encouraged to seek employment in rural and remote areas following graduation. For more information, please visit this website: www.guild.org.au/rural/
