Pharmacy Alumni Association

The need for the pharmacy profession to have an effective alumni group became apparent following the establishment of the Pharmacy Practice Foundation, and the Foundation was pleased to establish, foster and support this group. The first President of the Pharmacy Alumni Association, Ken Bickle, together with the support of his wife Margaret, put great energy into the formation of the Association which is now regarded as one of the best at the University and is a leader amongst all the schools and faculties of pharmacy in Australia.

Under the current leadership of E Ross Brown AM RFD ED (Right), the Pharmacy Alumni Association has continued to develop as the premier organisation for University of Sydney pharmacy graduates to stay in touch, participate in ongoing professional development and to give back to profession, the Faculty and the University.
The main focus of the Pharmacy Alumni Association is to:
- provide members with a link to the University, former classmates and current developments within the profession. It achieves this through a number of alumni activities in which all alumni are welcome and encouraged to participate.
- support the Faculty of Pharmacy through fundraising for capital development projects for the Faculty. To date the Association has actively raised significant funds for a number of building works to ensure that the Faculty maintains its reputation for teaching and research excellence in the 21st century.
The Pharmacy Alumni Association believes that its Alumni have a responsibility to consider assisting in the further development of the Faculty. To this end, alumni are encouraged to consider making a donation by contacting Jennifer Paquet, Alumni & Development Officer on 9114 0781.

Women for Pharmacy

Attention! 3 new Women for Pharmacy events are planned for February, March and April 2008. For more information and the booking forms, go to our monthly calendar. |
Women for Pharmacy is an innovative program that provides mentoring support for women pharmacists. Its aim is to give women working in pharmacy the opportunity to develop networks with other women within the profession in order to use the connections they build to achieve their professional goals. See Women for Pharmacy meetings and events.
Women represent a significant proportion of the profession and yet are in the minority in pharmacy ownership and leadership. Five networks have been set up in Sydney, with more groups looking to be formed in other areas; especially in rural areas.

Each of these groups has a facilitator or network coordinator and each group develops strategies to suit particular local needs of women pharmacists, with guidance and suggestions from Pharmacy Alumni Association’s Women for Pharmacy Committee. The facilitators also meet with the core committee to work out strategies for all involved. Some of the strategies that have proved useful for women pharmacists are:
- Personal and professional development
- Buying a Pharmacy or joining a partnership and then balancing work, family and relationships
- Acquiring new skills, resources and education and upgrading their clinical skills
- Time management
- Managing staff to reach their full potential
- Returning to work in various fields of the profession.
Some of the events for Women for Pharmacy have included a weekend conference and lunches and the annual dinner. Keep watching this site for upcoming Women for Pharmacy events. All female alumni are welcome to participate in any Women for Pharmacy activities. For details of your nearest Women for Pharmacy network, please contact the Pharmacy Alumni Association.
