Faculty of Pharmacy Safety Net Scheme for Research Only Staff

Safety Net Scheme Details

The Faculty has a Safety Net Scheme for Research Only members of staff. The scheme will support a maximum of one member of staff per annum, in cases where that member of staff has failed to secure funding through normal means. Funding may be granted on the understanding that it is only available to established research-only staff who have obtained funding for their own salaries in the past and who have directed their own research programs. It will not support salaries of research staff employed on grants that are run by other investigators, except if it is clear that they are prevented by funding criteria to be named investigators. It is also understood that investigators taking advantage of this scheme will actively seek further funding for their own salaries. Faculty funding may be terminated if this is not the case.

Applications will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Demonstration of substantial effort in applying for grants as a chief investigator, or primary investigator responsible for the research direction of the project (or in exceptional circumstances applying as an unnamed primary investigator for the specific purpose of drawing a salary).
  • Demonstration of the value of the project to date and the potential value of the outcomes of the project.
  • Demonstration of how the research is aligned with Faculty Research Strengths
  • A letter of support from the staff members head of discipline.
  • Project funding attracted to the Faculty in the past for at least three years as CI or primary investigator.
  • Publications
    - Quality of the publications – impact factor and citation rates
    - Potential publications – manuscripts submitted and other productivity accruing to the Faculty
    - In cases where publication rates might be low, the research has contributed to health policy in the form of a report or resulted in patents.
  • Pending patents
  • Collaborations
  • Conference presentations
  • Contribution to the Faculty
    - Teaching
    - Student supervision (post-graduate and advanced)
    - Committee work

This safety net scheme is intended only as an emergency fund, and would be awarded only in cases of exceptional merit. Any member of staff who has received funding from this safety net would not be eligible to reapply for three years.
